Senior pupils took part in this year’s ESB Science Blast in UL with their investigation, “Do birds care what colour their food is?” The investigation was carried out over a month in the springtime observing which coloured bird seed the birds favoured. It involved monitoring and recording the amount of coloured seed eaten each day.

Here is the judge’s feedback:-
Judges Feedback
Scientific Method:
The class had followed scientific method of hypothesis, predicting the “red” colour would be a win, as red is the most attractive colour. They measured the drop in seeds every day using a scale to find out which seed was eaten the most. This was documented for weeks on a paper.
Critical Thinking:
The finding of different colour seeds been eaten at a different quantity over the weeks was the most interesting find which was concluded to different species of birds being attracted to different colours based on their natural drive for different food. Great observations and findings.
Creativity:
They went about colouring batches of seeds in different colours. Apparently, this was the most interesting part of the project. Lovely to learn they enjoyed the experiment.
Collaboration:
Everyone was involved in setting up the colouring, bird feeders and documenting the results.
Communication:
Every student took turns to answer different questions. It was lovely to see everyone talk up about their hypothesis and deviations in results.
Additional Comments:
Amazing work by the students and lovely to see the support by the teachers. Excited to see the observations from the project on different birds attracted to different colours matched up with scientific findings previously done. Great Job school! Wishing you the Best!
